eSports will Rival the biggest traditional sports leagues in terms of future opportunities. - Steve Bornstein
When someone talks about college sports to just about anyone in the USA, you would be right to assume that they immediately thought of the big three sports; football, basketball, and baseball. What if you were told that there was actually a different multibillion-dollar industry that was rising through the roof and was making its way into the college sports scene. Esports, or electronic sports, is an industry built on professional gaming and the people who play those games. Programs have existed in the private sector for a long time, since as early as 1978, but organizations that deal more with college sports like the NCAE encompass over 94% of all varsity esports programs in the U.S as of June 2019. I personally am very excited to see esports make its way into the mainstream media and especially the college sector as that opens up opportunities for some students to make money off of their own skill at something that was once deemed nerdy or made you an outcast.I agree with allocating money to these programs as the watch time and the potential for monetary gain for the establishments/colleges is significant, not to mention the attractiveness of esports to a whole demographic of people who were once isolated.
